The Most Challenging Mountain Bike

A managing director with the offices of JP Morgan in Miami, Florida, Jesus Fomperosa Perea lives in nearby Key Biscayne. When he isn’t working, Jesus Fomperosa is a passionate mountain biker.

A great place to mountain bike locally, the island of Virginia Key sits just north of the island of Key Biscayne and is accessible by the Bear Cut Bridge. The northern tip of Virginia Key features a number of public mountain bike trails that interconnect in a beautiful natural environment.

Two of the most difficult of these Virginia Key trails are Stairway to Heaven and Another One Bites the Dust. Stairway to Heaven begins with a large wooden staircase that cyclists must ride down. Riders have described the trail as an extremely fast and fun black diamond run. Accessible from Stairway to Heaven, Another One Bites the Dust is a supremely difficult double black diamond trail. Consisting almost entirely of wooden platforms, it has a number of challenging drops and turns.

Unique Features of Mountain Bikes

Jesus Fomperosa, does mountain biking in his spare time. Mountain bikers like Jesus Fomperosa use distinctly different bicycles from city bikers.

Unlike city bikes, mountain bikes focus every element of their construction on the idea of traveling through rough terrain. This can include dirt, mud, or gravel, and can also be appropriate for regions with heavy snow.

Frames for mountain bikes use tough metals such as carbon fiber, titanium and steel, or may be made of carbon fiber. These tougher frames allow them to withstand hard or unusual impacts. Suspension systems also help reduce the effects of shock on the bicycle frame, and may be installed on the front wheel or both wheels.

The handlebars of mountain bikes also differ from their road cousins. Mountain bikes' flat handlebars force the rider into an upright position, improving balance as well as control, encouraging a safer ride over bumpy terrain.
